◎ Canon Point: Chapter 334
◎ Background/History: Regis, the canon

◎ Personality:
Regis' story throughout Noblesse is one of growing up. His overall narrative is one strongly centered in change, which is fitting considering he is introduced (and... still remains) a Noble who is on the cusp of his coming-of-age ceremony. Regis is out among the humans at first as a sort of rite of passage before he can be recognized as an adult—what he goes through is not what he expected, including the changes his own attitude faces. At the core, his personality remains the same, made up of the same traits and values, but it's the way he learns to deal with things and express himself that really grow and mature.

So! Regis' most notable trait is his pride as a Noble. Despite all of the things that happen to him between encountering Rai and Frankenstein in his introduction up to current canon, Regis has always placed an incredible amount of value in being a Noble and what that means. For him, it means being strong enough to help comrades and those who are weaker than himself, even if it costs him his life or safety—what is the point of having any strength if he isn't going to put it towards something worthwhile, after all? One of the first points of tension Regis reaches with the modified humans under Rai's care is that he believes they wanted to gain power for selfish reasons, and he gets really offended by this. It's completely absurd and frankly unconscionable to him that someone would gain power to do anything but protect someone else. As the series goes on, he maintains this belief, although he learns to see strength and power in others who don't have raw physical power; an upstanding human kid helping out his friends, for example, demonstrating that Regis has not espoused the ancient Noble view that humanity is weak, pitiful, and should probably just be subjugated. Quite the opposite, actually - he even chooses to stay living among humans, rather than return home to Lukedonia (the Noble homeland).

His pride manifests in another... less serious way, which is his somewhat bizarre obsession with "elegance." Regis is absolutely possessed by the concepts of elegance and piety, and tries very, very hard to act dignified and regal as often as possible. He admires Rai and other people he views as higher authorities for their intense elegance, essentially marking anyone really classy as a role model. That said, in himself — well, it doesn't really show. When he puts up a front of aloof dignity he comes across as plainly arrogant, and he's truthfully an emotional roller coaster that stomps around and throws angry tantrums when he's frustrated. He doesn't even realize he's doing it, sometimes; it has to be pointed out that he's stomping around the house before he pops back into some self-awareness and Greatly Laments!! that he could have acted with such inelegance. It even bleeds into his fighting style, which starts out as reckless tavern brawling and never really classes up from that point. He learns to work as a team and think before throwing punches at the first moment, but that's about it.

In the very dangerous all-fights-all-the-time lifestyle espoused by everyone who gets sucked into living in Rai's house, Regis is hot-headed and a bit of an unstoppable force, although it's not because he's the strongest. He isn't particularly strong compared to his fellow Nobles at all, because of his young age - in fact, he gets the shit kicked out of him in nearly every fight he's in. However, because he's motivated by a desire to protect the weak at all costs (including his own life), he does not back down unless he's literally knocked out. The way Regis approaches fights gives plenty of insight into his personality, both for that reason and because of his blatant distaste for his enemies. He despises the people he fights, almost always because they give him a Pure Evil reason to do so—and he takes great pleasure in insulting and provoking them before and during fights. It isn't really a strategy (sometimes it is), but more of an indicator that Regis will definitely say what's on his mind without hesitation, even if he's facing down someone who could break him in half with one hand.

As both a Noble and a member of "Rai's people," Nobles and humans mixed, Regis' loyalties are somewhat divided. Although he begins distrustful and dismissive of the modified humans under Rai's protection, they soon become grudging allies — and then less grudging and plain allies, when they lay down their lives for him in the Lukedonia arc. In terms of the Nobles, Regis is primarily concerned with his clan and his clan leader/grandfather, who is the only living family he has left. Regis is often unsure of where he stands with his grandfather but still wishes to emulate him and get his approval. His grandfather is where much of his determination to do the right thing even if it seems foolish or dangerous comes from; from him, Regis learns not to take the coward's way out to save his own skin. The rest of Noble politics don't involve Regis much (again, because of his age), although on a narrative level he does espouse much of the previous Noble generation's desire for change, being as he is the little Noble who goes out and intermingles with humans and forms new alliances. And then there are those modified humans, his comrades.

They're very important to him even if he won't say it in a straightforward manner, more or less. He's named "the ace" of their little fighting squad, the "RK-5," and though he claims to be bothered by it and never agreed to join, he still will follow them into battle and put himself in harm's way to protect them. It's the same for Seira, his... Noble babysitter, to a point... Seira is his long-time companion and informal guardian in the human world, and Regis values her like family. They even have a mental connection! The RK-5 gang are his closest comrades, and so, while he'll act as an envoy of Lukedonia if he really has to, he's usually firmly planted on RK-5's side.

In everyday life, Regis is basically just a big nerd. He pretends to be a high schooler and takes it very seriously, actually doing his homework and everything when he's not off fighting for his life. He does everything with a serious efficiency and gets uppity when people try to slack off on chores or make a mess that he'll have to clean up. He can be social, but he's not exactly a laid back, fun guy - his usual attitude is brisk and uptight, practically rigid. He does, however, have a very upright kinder side to him, as he often volunteers to walk the normal human kids home or go grocery shopping with Seira. And then he has a really short temper, most often flaring up from messes in Frankenstein's house or arguing about chores with somebody. He is not, however, completely up to date on normal human social conventions, and so he's casually dismissive toward strangers when he's disinterested and not very apologetic about it. It's a holdover from when he first went out among humans and considered them all basically the same; a bad habit.

With people he knows, however, he's more relaxed with displaying emotions. He'll liberally employ sarcasm and clever quips, now that he knows how to do them, and has grown to be downright casual in ways he never would have before when Noble hierarchy was the most important thing to him. Cases in point: The first, when fighting the Noble Karias for a chance to go see his clan leader in some political misunderstanding case, Regis "wins" on a technicality after being apparently defeated, and Karias all but calls him a little shit before saying he's changed; The second, Regis is just as quick to leap to the defense of his modified human friends as he is to defend a Noble's honor, something that other Nobles find weird and backwards. He's had a paradigm shift from believing what he's been taught by dusty old Nobles to wanting to see the world and the people in it for himself before he makes snap judgments.

Overall, Regis came onto the scene as an arrogant little brat who was quick to judge and overconfident in his abilities, and has grown to still be an arrogant little brat, but with better judge of character and a deeper understanding of himself as someone with his own priorities and his own path to find and take.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
Regis is is a Noble (aka really old basically-immortal race), which means he has the standard set of Noble abilities:

GREATER SPEED/AGILITY/STRENGTH: What it says on the tin. He's much stronger and faster than regular humans.

MIND CONTROL: All Nobles have a certain degree of mind control abilities, which they use via direct eye contact with others. It will only work on those who are a) less powerful than he is, and b) not skilled enough to force him out. There have been instances of characters who are immune for other specific reasons, as well, so it's a case-by-case basis type of thing in general. The actual mind control is a power of suggestion type, rather than a direct puppet-control type.

REGENERATION: He heals fast. Unless the wounds are very serious or an overwhelming amount, in which case he can heal enough to endure but won't fully heal until he can go take a nap or something.

ELECTRICITY: He can manifest electric charge that appears as a bluish glow around his hands. This can be fired like bolts/beams or "coat" his hands in order to strengthen his attacks. It takes considerable effort and he can't do it too many times in a short period without getting exhausted.

MIND LINK: Only relevant to Seira, as the two of them have a psychic connection. It lets them know when the other is injured/in trouble/generally down and out. It also weakens the farther apart they get, so it's effectively pinging a psychic dial tone unless Seira shows up.

BEING GORGEOUS: Okay stay with me... Nobles, for whatever reason, do not need to put effort into maintaining their physical appearance the way humans do. They don't need to shower or style their hair. They can do this by just thinking about it.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Nothing special, just his clothes.

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: earth
◎ Sense: Sight, because he fights a lot and so needs to see what he's doing... pretty basic.
◎ Seven Character Traits: ( driven, loyal, noble i know ) | ( short-tempered, serious, impulsive ) + protective of others

◎ First-Person Sample: well there's this, which is old, so there's also this which is... shorter

◎ Third-Person Sample:
It's the small mountain of unfamiliar snacks that finally spoils Regis' good mood. Or "good enough" mood, because there's always something lying in wait to set him off, and today it's unfamiliar snacks. Left strewn all over the coffee table, long after the children have gone home, waiting for someone responsible (that would be him) to clean them up. Regis stands over them with a dustpan and a plastic bag and a frown, wondering when it will end.

He's had the argument with the children before—Seira buys groceries for their benefit, so if they're so eager to consume even more sugary snacks, all they have to do is ask and it will be taken care of. As many times as they insist that they don't want to impose, and it's fine, and Seira glances at him across the room and says nothing, it's so - unappreciative! To bring such things into someone else's house and leave them in a mess on someone else's furniture... At least if Seira had purchased the snacks, it wouldn't be so uncouth. Regis has long since given up on trying to get the children to be neater while eating, but this...! This great offense.

Seira puts a hand on his shoulder and he startles, looking up at her first in surprise, then in search of some support— "Look at this! Seira, they don't appreciate all you've done for them-"

"They do," she says, and Regis deflates near instantly. Seira doesn't lie, or tolerate mistreatment, but look at this mess... "Do you want help?"

"No." He shrugs off her hand, feels guilty about it, and holds up his dustpan. "This will be sufficient, and cleaning up after them is my duty. Thank you." He nods briskly and Seira nods back, returning to the kitchen and leaving Regis to gaze over his cookie-crumb kingdom once more. With renewed determination he starts to clean, pausing over an empty box of some kind of strange-shaped sweet the children had tried to get him to eat. He'd refused, and they'd looked at him like he'd broken all four of their hearts at once. How—he frowns, face hot, at the box—silly. It's only a cookie, not some kind of national treasure! (That he is taking the snacks provided by the house too seriously does not occur to him.) Such carefree young people...

Well. If that's what they want. Regis hums thoughtfully to himself as he drops the empty box into the bag. Maybe he'll accompany them to the store, next time.
